You may renew your items unless another patron has placed a hold on the item or the item has been recalled to be placed on Reserve. Items can be renewed either in person, on the phone (515-271-2111) or online, although there are limits to the number of times items can be renewed (see table below). It is not necessary to bring the items into the library for them to be renewed, until the renewal limit has been met or the item has been recalled. The following renewal limits apply based on the user’s status and item type:
|Borrower Type||Books* (with “Stacks” as their location)||DVDs, Videos & Audio CDs*||Browsing Books*|
|Undergraduate||5 times||5 times||5 times|
|Graduate Students||4 times||5 times||5 times|
|Faculty & Staff||10 times||5 times||5 times|
|Special Users||3 times||2 times||2 times|
*Unless recalled earlier
Once the renewal limit has been reached, all items must be returned to the library for check in. If there is no hold or recall on the item at that time, and the item is in good physical condition (i.e., not requiring any repairs), you may check out the item again.
You may renew eligible items online by accessing My Account in the online catalog. See Using Your Online Library Account for information about how to log in and what services are available through My Account.
InterLibrary Loan (ILL) Renewals
ILL renewals must be requested online through your ILL account. Keep in mind that the renewal limits listed above do not apply to ILL renewals, and the loaning library may not approve your renewal. Unfortunately, Cowles Library has no control over another library’s decision to renew an item they have loaned to us. If the loaning library will not allow a renewal, you may resubmit your ILL request, and we will attempt to borrow the same item from another library.
